Shot At Life – Become a Champion

shot at life logoI met Devi the Director of Shot@Life last year at Type A Parent Blogging Conference. Devi was joined by Advocates and Champions trying to spread the word about Shot@Life .  I believe their mission that weekend was to not only try to educate others about their cause but to empower bloggers to use their voices for Social and Global Good.

When starting O’Boy! Organic in late 2009 I did it because I wanted to educate others about how processed foods and GMO’s are causing great damage to our health. Therefore teaching parents the benefits of eating organically, feeding a picky eater is easier than you think and sharing REAL FOOD recipes that the whole family can love.  After spending time with Devi and others from Shot@Life I realized the importance of our voices in Social Media. We can change someone’s perceptive by a tweet, FB Status or blog post.

What drew me in to the Shot@Life Campaign? For one….I have a mother (now in her 70’s) that is a Polio survivor.  Hearing that Polio is still a real threat to children in countries like Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan, really hit home for me.  Polio attacks a child’s nervous system and can cause muscle weakness, paralysis and even death. My mother was suffering, going in and out of hospitals for over a year when she was a young teenager. My mother is one of the lucky ones, because she did survive. Even in the 50′s she had medical services to help her and so many others years later are still not receiving.

We live in a nation where Medical care is almost taken for granted because it’s freely accessible for everyone. Children in developing countries do not have the same opportunities as we do. This had led to children in developing countries dying every year of preventable diseases.  If we can expand access to vaccines it can prevent an additional 1.5 million deaths each year.

As a parent in the United States we have the right to choose, to vaccinate or not. Regardless of your belief in vaccinations, we need to give mothers around the world the voice and power to be able to choose the right safe and healthy path for their children. Many mothers across the globe walk over 15 miles to reach life saving vaccines for their children.  Why are mothers walking to great lengths to vaccinate their children? Because, they have lost children of preventable diseases and they WILL NOT lose another. As a parent……I’d walk to the ends of the earth to save my children. We are not that different are we?

How can you use your voice to help others?

Use your voice to share this story with your friends and family. Knowledge is power; use that power to educate others of what is happening to children across the globe. Ask yourself this question – shouldn’t all children have a shot at life? Did you know that every 20 seconds a child dies of a preventable disease? With a small donation to Shot@Life  it gives a child the vaccinations they need, so they too have a shot at a future of having their first steps, saying their first words, celebrating many birthdays, losing their first tooth.

You MUST check out the new Shot@Life mobile app. It helps parents tell the story of their child’s “firsts” by capturing photos and chronicling childhood moments from 0 to 5 through the milestone tracker, all while helping to build awareness about the Shot@Life campaign and the life-saving vaccines that help give children around the world a shot at a healthy life

All I ask is that you use your voice for those that can’t be heard. You may not think anyone is listening but if you could help just one person, isn’t that better than helping none?  I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to use my voice in the blogging community and beyond to educate others in the importance of vaccines for children in developing countries. I hope you continue to follow along with me in my journey as a Shot@Life Champion.
