Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe

As a child the thing I enjoyed most after playing in the snow was coming inside and enjoying a nice cup of Hot Chocolate…not much as changed since then. I still LOVE a nice cup of Hot Chocolate and so do my kids. One of things that I have noticed is all the unwanted ingredients in those famous hot chocolate packs that I once loved. Sure they are easy and inexpensive but if I am going to serve myself and my kids something sweet why not know exactly what’s in it. In the beginning I thought, I’ll just buy organic because that has to be better right?? Not so much…

Gourmet Hot Chocolate Milk with Cinnamon and Marshmallows

Take a look at the ingredients of two different types of Hot Chocolate. One is a conventional hot chocolate mix that we all grew up on, and another one is an organic one that we should feel better about when we give it to our kids.

Conventional hot chocolate mix Ingredients: sugar, modified whey, cocoa (processed with alkali), hydrogenated coconut oil, nonfat milk, calcium carbonate, less than 2% of: salt, dipotassium phosphate, mono- and diglyderides, artificial flavor, carrageenan. Contains milk.

Organic Hot Chocolate Mix IngredientsOrganic evaporated sugar cane juice, Organic nonfat dry milk powder, Organic cocoa powder, Organic guar gum, sea salt, Organic carob gum, Organic vanilla powder (Organic vanilla extract, Organic maltodextrin, Organic gum arabic) (Fair Trade Certified)

Well the organic hot chocolate does have fewer ingredients and more that you can pronounce it still has ingredients that I know I couldn’t’ find in my pantry..how about you?

So I thought…if I can’t buy something that I feel good about giving my family then why don’t make it myself, it can’t be that hard right?

Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe

I started with Dark Chocolate – about 4oz I used 4 cups Raw Milk or you can use your favorite organic milk. Start blending milk and chocolate together on medium low heatAdd 1 teaspoon of Pure Vanilla – add a cinnamon stick for more flavor and a pinch of cayenne pepper.

Then mix together until the chocolate is melted and milk is hot. DO NOT BOIL

Once everything is blended you can then put into cups and ENJOY! If it’s too hot for your little ones place 1 or 2 ice cubes in their cup before serving. Trust me when I say…this extra effort is so worth it because when you taste this it’s like sipping on a melted chocolate bar…oh yeah you are and guess what I used just 3 ingredients
MILK
DARK CHOCOLATE
VANILLA

That’s it! When making these easy little changes in your life by eating and drinking real foods you don’t have to sacrifice taste and you are becoming healthier in the process.
