As a new year begins we all start thinking about how we can make our lives better. We all want to go on a diet, eat healthier, spend more time with family, the list could go on and on. I reflect on the past years and always wonder, what I can improve on and what new things can I accomplish? It’s always a work in process right?
For me I really started looking deep into my life and my personal self last year. I started to realize that I wasn’t happy, I really wasn’t happy with myself, my career and marriage. I knew I needed to make some changes but I wasn’t sure where to begin. I was in a rut and how was I going to dig myself out of it? I felt I had more questions than answers, and I needed guidance to help me switch things around. I started making some changes. Some changes were small some a bit bigger, and in the end it has given me a healthy mind & body in 2016.
5 things that I’ve done and will continue to do in 2016 to give me a healthier whole self.
This isn’t the best quality photo but it was taken during a much overdue weekend away. It was exactly what we needed to reconnect and relax.
HEALTHY MARRIAGE – My husband and I have been married 14 year and together 18 years. Marriage is a series of hills and valleys and we were stuck in the valley for a long time. Our lives were revolving around our careers and kids that we forgot about us as a couple. We needed time to reconnect and rediscover why we fell in love in the first place. One of the first things we did was take off the gloves and really listen to each another, and what we needed personally so we could make one another happy. Date nights help, but taking time and spending a weekend away was one of the best things we have done in a long time. I highly advise it!
HEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS – One thing I’ve done over the last year is cut out the bullshit. When I say bullshit (I kinda really like that word) I mean friendships that were not working, business opportunities that were not giving me what I needed and not spending time on things that I “thought” I needed to do. Once I got those things out of my life, a weight was lifted off of my back. I could breathe again! So if you are overly stressing about something, ask yourself…..is it really worth it. If it’s not then get rid of it. Trust me, you will be a thousand times happier.
HEALTHY BODY – I was at my heaviest at the end of 2014, like 30 lbs overweight and I felt like shit. I certainly didn’t want to look at myself naked so why would my husband think I wanted him to see me naked. He said to me many times that he didn’t care about my weight, and I truly believe he didn’t but — I DID. I just didn’t feel good and losing weight helped me get back to where I once was (mentally and physically). For me it’s not about being a size 6 again it’s about feeling good in the skin I’m in and right now I do. It’s all that matters, right?
HEALTHY MIND – I needed a little extra help with my life challenges and therapy was where I needed to be. I have lots of family members and friends that I can vent to but I needed someone that was impartial. Someone that could give me the tools I needed to help me make those changes. Therapy helped me work towards a goal and brought back my confidence and gave me peace of mind that I was on the right track. I also started meditation, using essential oils and exercising gave me plenty of opportunity to reflect and focus on the person I wanted to be. So if you are in a rut, you can’t climb out seek out a ways to help you move forward. In 2016 I am looking forward to attending these mid week refresh workshops with Small Steps. These workshops helps you reconnect with your needs and nurture yourself so you can nurture others.
HEALTHY CAREER – I went back teaching part time in the fall. It couldn’t of happened at a better time in my life and it’s a perfect fit for me and my family. When doing cooking classes and parties for kids I said every single time how I miss being with the kids and teaching. Not only am I back doing something I love but I am personally financially stable. I can stand on my own two feet for the first time in a long time and it feels amazing.
My advice for 2016 is to be true to yourself, listen to your needs and follow through on them. When you do those simple things you are on your way to a happier and healthier you. What are you doing to have a healthy mind & body in 2016?
