Spring is here which means lots of rain. Not sure about your area but, here in Philadelphia we’ve gone from tons of snow to tons of rain. This past weekend was rained out and now today again…RAIN! As I was pulling out our rain gear I noticed boots that weren’t fitting and raincoats MIA. I hate going to the mall so I did a little online research for the best rain gear for my family. We are trying to live a more sustainable life, so when I can purchase household and clothes that are organic, fair trade or by companies that give back, I do. Here are my top picks for family rain gear that captures some if not all of my requires.
Eco – Friendly Rain Gear
UMBRELLA – I love this Totes Eco Brella which you can easily purchase at your local Target. The frame is made from 70% recycled aluminium, and the auto open/close and canopy is made with 100% recycled PET from plastic bottles. Let’s not forget the handle, that is made from bamboo with a waxed hemp strap. The cost – around $18 which I think is a cheaper than other brands.
RAINCOATS – I now have a one stop shop for rain gear plus for so much more. Patagonia has clothes and gear for men, women and kids. I love that their rain jackets all come with a little pouch which are perfect for storing and when traveling. Patagonia has been a company that’s been around for a long time. Over time Patagonia has made a name for itself as a sustainable and social good company. Their products are made from environmentally conscious fabrics: organic cotton, tencel lyocell, Hemp, chlorine-free wool, recycled polyester and recycled nylon. Not only are their clothes made with organic and recycled materials but they employee activism and reduce their carbon footprint on the earth.
BOOTS: A few weeks back I focused on rain boots. I actually wear rain boots while working in the yard on a mucky day and I think it’s great for kids to wear while playing outside because they can be sprayed off and keeps the bottoms of their pants cleaner. Having 2 boys I can easily state with confidence that they are a hot mess! Check out my top eco-friendly rain boot ideas.
Stay dry, informed and eco-friendly this spring!
