We’ve all gotten a sunburn before and it’s NOT fun at all. I have 2 young boys that are constantly in the sun during the summer. We spend much of our time at the shore (beach for non NJ/PA residents) surfing and soaking up as much sun as possible. We love it, and could be there for hours. I mean, I’ve yet had a beach day where my oldest wants to go back to the house. He could be in the water surfing, boogie boarding or just playing in the sand until the sun goes down.
This past weekend was our first time at the beach for the season which is why I wanted to try a new sunscreen – Block Island Organics. I am always searching for new organic all natural sunscreen for our family. Block Island is a start up company based in……you guessed it Block Island RI. Many sunscreens contain dangerous chemicals that are absorbed into your skin that could cause hormonal disruptions and allergic skin reactions. The safest sunscreens are mineral based such as Block Island Organics. Mineral based sunscreens do not absorb into the skin but act as a physical barrier to block the UV rays. I suggest heading to the EWG guide to sunscreens to get a full report.
The Block Island Baby with SPF 30 is what I used for the boys. It contains a very lightweight non-nano and mineral based sunscreen for babies over 6 months and perfect for sensitive skin types. I also used this on my face, neck and chest. I then used the Block Island SPF 15 on the rest of my body. I naturally have dark skin and tan very easily so I felt comfortable using the SPF 15. The SPF 15 does not contain zinc but other natural organic ingredients. Both sunscreens are water resistant and is free of paraben, phthalates, nano particle, artificial fragrances, it’s also non eye irritating (which is perfect for kids) and never tested on animals and made right here in the USA.
So we were at the beach for about 5 hours. I lathered all of us up with the sunscreen and pretty much baked in the sun for 5 hours. The boys were mostly in the water and I have to say I re-applied the sunscreen on their face only about 2.5 hrs into our sun fest. They did have rash guards on so basically the main parts of their bodies that were exposed were their face, neck, ears and arms. Don’t forget those ears….they can burn big time. So at the end of the day in the sun no one was sunburn. YAY!
I actually thought it was nice and smooth, non-greasy and easy to put on. The only thing I didn’t like was that it flaked off as I was rubbing it in. I just took my towel and rubbed it off a bit and it came off easily still leaving plenty of sunscreen on the body. Since it’s non- drying and very fast drying I may have put a little too much on and not rubbed it in fast enough. We did put sunscreen on at the beach which I don’t recommend. The best thing is to put sunscreen on before you get to your destination. I just tend to forget and then I end up yelling for the kids before they head into the water….let me tell you they are not happy! UGH.
