Cooking with kids can be a ton of fun but can also be a bit frustrating when you have a little one that wants to help but you don’t have the right kind of tools that you feel safe letting your child use.
Over the years with my own kids and through teaching cooking classes and parties I’ve realized one thing. When you have the proper tools for little hands things go much smoother for you and your mini chef. Here are some of my favorite kids cooking tools that have been successful for kids of all ages.
6 Must Have Kitchen Tools When Cooking with Kids
KIDS APRON: Lets face it, kids are a mess! The best investment you can make is buying them a little apron to wear when helping in the kitchen. Instead of wiping their dirty hands all over their clothes they can get the apron as dirty as they would like and then just throw it in the wash. We’ve used a simple white apron but these matching aprons for mother and daughter are super cute too.
KIDS KNIFE – Cutting is a huge part of food preparation. Kids love to use knives, but they may not as careful or have the best fine motor skills they need to use it properly. This Pampered Chef knife works well for children as young as 2 years old. It’s a perfect size for little hands and you don’t have to worry about them cutting themselves with a sharp knife.
MINI CHOPPER – I love this manual OXO Good Grips Chopper because when kids use it they have fun and helps them strengthen their motor skills. It’s perfect for when you have a ton of veggies to chop and a single knife just won’t cut it.
EGG BEATER – Remember those old school hand held egg beaters? My grandmother had one and I loved using it as a kid. This OXO Good Grips Eat Beater is new and improved still with the same concept. Again, perfect gaining hand strength and eye hand coordination. When you are not using it for cooking give your child a big bowl and a little bit of soap and they can have fun making bubbles.
SPIRALIZER – This is another fun one that kids love. Besides being easy to use the kids are creating new and fun ways to eat their veggies. This Spiralizer has stainless steel blades and is also BPA Free.
ROLLING PIN – My boys are now just getting the handle of our large rolling pin and they are 8 & 10 years old. I only wish I had this non-stick rolling pin when they were younger.
Besides tools kids need to make something of their very own. I remember having my own baking set so when I would make a cake or bread with my mom I’d have my own mini pan of my own. I could decorate it anyway I wanted which made me happy and my mom could then have her perfect cake too. This 10 piece kids silicone bakeware set is just too cute, not to get.
If you have a budding chef on your hands any of these items would be a perfect addition to your kitchen. What are some of your favorite cooking tools your kids like to use in the kitchen?
