5 Ways to Help Fight the Stomach Flu Naturally

I have to say our family is pretty healthy, knock on wood. In fact the last time my boys were at the doctor for any type of sickness was in 2014. But, that came to s screeching halt this week when my oldest son came down the the dreaded stomach flu. It hit him like a mack truck, fine the night before but woke up with a headache, fever and severe stomach pain. For me, nothing is worse then seeing my child sick and it makes me want to do everything possible to make them feel better again. Unless it’s something serious that warrants a doctor’s visit I like treat these viral infections naturally because antibiotics will not help,  and I’d rather not spend unnecessary money at the drugstore on drugs when I can easily naturally fight the stomach flu with items that I already have in my home.

GET REST: One of the best things you can do when your not feeling well is to rest. Get under the covers and sleep it off. Sometimes it’s harder to get those kids to actually sleep but when they are feeling really bad you shouldn’t have to convince them too much.

STOP EATING: Even if it’s for a few hours, just stop eating. To be honest, who wants to eats when your stomach is one! But when you have those times that you are hungry you might eat things that could irritate your stomach rather than heal it. Some don’ts are – milk, sugar, soda, caffeine, spicy and fatty foods just to name a few. Foods that are best would be bland items such as bananas, toast, crackers and kefir because of it’s rich in probiotics and help replenish the good bacteria in your gut.

PEPPERMINT: There are a zillion ways you can use peppermint to help keep your home and body healthy. Peppermint contains antispasmodic properties that help with gas and bloating and helps relieve stomach cramps and also headaches. You can rub peppermint oil on your abdomen to give you relief from a upset stomach or diarrhea. We like to make a tea using just 1 drop of peppermint oil to a cup of hot water and teaspoon of honey.  Peppermint is considered a HOT oil it has a cooling effect which can help reduce fever when applied to the spine and the bottom of the feet.

CINNAMON: It’s a very powerful antibacterial and antiviral agent that will destroy any bacteria or virus in your stomach. Most times chills, aches and pains go along with the stomach flu and cinnamon will help relieve those pains too and make you feel more comfortable. Make a cinnamon tea which is similar to peppermint. Add just 1 drop of cinnamon oil to a cup of hot water, then add 1 teaspoon of honey. If you don’t have an oil you can cinnamon powder then strain it before drinking.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR: It’s a rich source of pectin which helps soothe an irritated stomach. Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of honey to 1 cup of hot water to help with gas and cramping.

Having the stomach flu is no fun, especially for little ones. It can be just a one-two day virus but sometimes can last 5 to 10 days for those severe cases. If you ever feel that it’s getting worse by all means call your doctor. You know your body best and what’s working and what’s not. Have you tried any of these methods for treating the stomach flu? Which ones worked for you and if you have other remedies that helped that I didn’t mention, please share!
