5 Tips When Fishing with Kids

Fishing with kids logoFishing with kids is a great way for them to experience nature. Fishing can be something fun for boys, girls and the whole family. You don’t need a boat to fish; you can take the kids to the beach, lake, stream or local pond. For us it’s about the process not necessary the product. Don’t get me wrong, they love catching something but just being out in nature doing something fun is an experience in itself. Fishing also teaches children responsibility and patience which are skills they need throughout their life. I am not a fisherman but I’ve taken my kids fishing many times and I have learned a few things because I’ve made many mistakes along the way. Here are some tips that I’ve found helpful during our fishing adventures.

5 Tips When Fishing with Kids

First Timer – If you are a beginner and not sure if your child will like fishing then try and borrow a rod for the first time instead of spending money on something they may not do again.

Skip Kiddy Rods – The character rods are cute but that’s about it. An ultra light spinning or spin rod and reel combo is easier for kids to use and they get a feel of what real fishing is like.

Keep it Inexpensive – No need to buy anything expensive. You can get a rod for under $20 at Wal-Mart. I suggest getting a rod that has a reel attached; there is no need to buy that separate.

Ask for Help – Get advice on the types of bobbers, weights, hooks and bait from someone that fishes or even the sales person at the store. Make sure you explain to the sales person where you are going to fish so you can get the proper equipment.

Size of the Bait Matters – don’t get crazy with huge night crawlers, worms or shrimp. Make sure the bait is the same size of the hook. We actually have done pretty well with pieces of hot dogs.

Just remember to keep it fun and exciting. Kids like to stay active and when fishing it’s more about being out in nature experiencing something new and making lasting memories.
