I will be the first one to admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of coconut oil a few years back. Slowly it grew on me, kind of like Brussels sprouts and asparagus. I now have multiple jars one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom for various uses. Besides cooking, coconut oil can be used for many things which is why I now love it so much. Here is why it’s good to have around, and how to use coconut oil daily to improve your health.
DIGESTIVE – Coconut oil is anti-viral, and contains lauric, capric and caprylic acids-recommended to combat candida.
HAIR – There are many vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil. It can nourish the scalp, remove build up from hair follicles, fight infections and fungus, supports hair growth all while adding volume and shine without harmful chemicals.
MOISTURIZE – Coconut oil is able to penetrate the skin on a deeper level than average moisturizers because of it’s low molecular weight and it bonds with proteins and fights microbes in the body because it’s loaded with good fats.
COOKING – Coconut oil is mainly a saturated fat and is able to withstand higher temperatures than other oils. This makes it one of the best oils for cooking.
BAKING – Coconut oil is incredibly versatile, and can be used in place of butter or other vegetable oils. Just remember that butter is 80% fat and 20% water so when substituting you will not need as much coconut oil in those recipes.
IMMUNE SUPPORT – As you know coconut oil is antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral which fights bacteria and creates a hostile environment for viruses. When sick replace sugar (because it feeds off bad bacteria) with coconut oil. Use 1 tablespoon 3x a day to help fight the cold off. You can mix it in a smoothie, your coffee, spread on toast or just eat it plain.

SHAVING – Once you make your own shaving cream you will never want to buy it again. The main ingredient is coconut oil which reduces irritation and redness but also keeps your pores clog free.
BODY SCRUBS – Coconut oil absorbs into the deepest layer of your skin and when mixed with exfoliates like salt, or sugar it helps get rid of all that dead skin and with keeping the new skin moisturized. I use this coffee scrub weekly in the shower and I love this winter scrub when my hands are torn up from the cold.
MAKEUP REMOVER – I keep a jar of coconut oil in my bathroom cabinet because I use it so frequently for my hair body and face. I put a small bit on my finger and rub on my face and eyes to remove makeup. Not only does it remove my makeup without using harsh chemicals but my face becomes moisturized too.
MOISTURIZER – Not only does coconut oil absorb deeply into your skin without clogging pores but it helps heal psoriasis, eczema and acne. This dry skin balm is the bomb! I use it on my hands, feet, lips, or anywhere that is chapped, even a baby’s bottom from diaper rash.
HAIR – To help your hair from drying out rub a little coconut oil in your hair and scalp before shampooing. You can even make a leave in conditioner by applying a dime size into your hair (especially the ends) and style as usual. Coconut oil helps control frizz and prevents split ends.
LICE – If your child comes home with lice use coconut oil. Using the combination of Melaleuca and coconut oil together can kill 100% of lice. Mix together 1/2 cup coconut oil and 20 drops of melaleuca then saturate the hair. Cover with a plastic shower camp and leave it on for at least an hour then rinse with apple cider vinegar. The coconut works as a smother and stun the lice and helps dissolve the glue that lice use to attach to the hair shaft.
PETS – If you love your dog or cat, use coconut oil. Add a small bit to their food to help give them fresher breath, sleeker coat and prevent joint disorders. If your pet has dry skin you can apply it directly to the affected spot. I like to mix a little lavender with the coconut oil when applying to skin which helps with itching. When adding to food a good rule of thumb is 1/4 teaspoon for every 10 lbs.
POPCORN – For gods sake make your own darn popcorn and when you do use coconut oil. Because it can withstand high heat it’s great for this. My favorite is the Nutiva buttery flavor…O.M.G to die for!! Trust me on this! Now if you use a air popper you can heat up a few tablespoons of the buttery coconut oil and drizzle it on top then add a little sea salt. PERFECTION!
COFFEE – This is my new favorite thing, and if you haven’t tried it please do. When you add a spoonful of coconut oil to your coffee it gives you more of a energy boost, speeds up your metabolism and boosts your immune system. Plus, it actually tastes pretty amazing.
VAPOR RUB – This is a must for us during the winter months. Making your own vapor rub is easy and more cost effective and you are reducing the toxins going into your body.
When purchasing coconut oil remember to choose a high quality coconut oil that is virgin, organic and processed in the least invasive way. Do your homework and purchase a coconut oil from a stand up company who provide fair trade products and detailed information about their coconut oil.
