10 Free Things To Do With Kids In Philadelphia

Well we had our first full week of summer break and we are already bored. I have the kids going to a local day camp and we’ve signed up for some sports camps but that’s about it. Everything cost money, and this mama is looking to save a little this summer. I plan on taking advantage of the many FREE things our community has to offer. Why not, right? When you can entertain the kids without spending much or any money is considered a WIN in my books. So grab the kids and head into Philadelphia for some low cost fun!

10 Free Things To Do With Kids In Philadelphia

Kelly Drive – Bring your bikes, scooters or just walk along Kelly Drive Boathouse Row area. It’s so beautiful and a great place to people watch. If you are visiting and don’t have your own bikes you can rent some or even a surrey if you have little ones that you don’t feel comfortable riding their own bikes.

Spruce Street Harbor – Perfect on any sunny day. Grab a hammock and relax or play a game of giant chess, connect four or Jenga. If you are looking to be a bit more active you can rent kayaks or paddle boats for a low cost. You can pack a lunch or purchase something there. Lots of food trucks and the Franklin Fountain has a pop up location there too. YUM!

Spruce Street Harbor

Pastorius Park – Is located in one of my favorite Philadelphia neighborhoods – Chestnut Hill. During the Summer they have free Wednesday evening concerts so bring a picnic or grab something to go from one of the amazing restaurants in town.

Smith Memorial Playground – One of our favorite things is the amazing wooden slide that goes into their playground. You can play outdoors or indoors using imaginative play toys. The kids will be entertained for hours.

Franklin Square logo

Franklin Square – Grab your pennies to throw in the fountain and enjoy the playgrounds for free. Pack a lunch or if you want a treat they have a snack bar. For a fee you can have fun doing mini-golf or take a ride on the fun carousel.

Philadelphia Art Museum – Most of the time it cost money to enter the museum but on Wednesdays after 5pm and the first Sunday of every month it’s “Pay What You Wish” and they have a ton of family friendly events for you to enjoy with kids.

US Mint – Yes you can get into the US Mint for FREE. Pretty cool huh? It’s perfect to do on those really hot days when you want a break from the heat. You can tour the Mint for free and watch coins being made, my boys love it.

blue cross riverbank

Blue Cross Riverbank – If you get bored over at Spruce Street take a stroll over to the Riverbank, it’s just a short walk. In the winter it’s an ice rink and they continue the fun throughout the summer by creating a roller rink…how fun is that? Bring your own skates or rent some for a fee. If you are not into skating you can easily just hang out on the grounds and play checkers, corn hole other fun games.

Please Touch Museum – Every first Wednesday of the month from 4PM to 7Pm you can enter the museum for just $2 instead of the usual $16. My boys are 8 and 10 years old and still love going there.

Free Movies on Penns Landing – I can’t imagine a better way to see a movie under the stars and on the water. This would be a great way to end a day of fun after exploring Spruce Street Harbor and or River Rink.

These are only 10 of the many things you can do in Philadelphia with your kids that are either free or very low cost. Remember it doesn’t cost a ton of money to have fun in the city! Happy Summer Everyone!
